19/06 Cultural Visit: The Knights Hospitalliers & In-Guardia Re-Enactment

As part of our Cultural Visits programme we visited the The Knights Hospitalliers and the In-Guardia re-enactment held at Fort St.Elmo.

The Knights Hospitalliers
We visted this exhibition held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre. Explanations about the use of the Centre as a hospital were made and during the exhibition, we also explained various aspects of the hospital, the way patients were cared for, the silver service given and other important facts. We then visited the shelters under the Conference Centre and cubs could see the way people lived during wars or deadly diseases.

Then, as we finished our tour and before going out from the Centre, the big hall was opened for us to see its grandness. It was a breathtaking view, seeing such a big hall with the magnificent ceiling decorations.

In-Guardia Re-Enactment
At 1045hrs, we were already near Fort St Elmo to view this re-enactment. People dressed in the period’s costumes greeted us on our arrival. We then entered the fort and we were astonished how grand St Elmo was. We walked through an arched corridor, into the courtyard where preparations for the show were being finalised. We went upstairs and took a place on a balcony exactly in the middle of the courtyard. At 1100hrs the show started with 20 men shooting their guns….which was rather frightening !!!! Well the show was interesting and we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly in spite of the scorching heat.!
