15/01  Cultural Visits By Arrow : Hypogeum & Mdina

As Part of the Bronze and Silver Arrows, a Cultural Visit to Tarxien Temples, the Hypogeum and the Silent City was organised.

The Silver Arrow group left from Church Square at 8.30 am and made a tour around the enchanting city of Mdina explaining the historical buildings with their baroque architecture. During this outing we also visited:

The Mdina Experience - an audio-visual presentation that traces the history of Malta's former capital, from its foundation to the present.

The Medieval Times - Located in Palazzo Costanzo, built by the Costanzo noble family in the late 17th Century, which took us through a Medieval adventure of the 14th and 15th Century from the very beginning. We learnt what was the role of a butcher, a plasterer and a sentry guarding the medieval walls, family life in a carpenter's house, blacksmiths, lords, market sellers in street corners and much more.

The Knights of Malta - a series of tableaux and an audio-visual show, telling the story of the Order's origins during the Crusades with The Blessed Gerard and the founding of the Hospital, the Knights' arrival in Malta, how they delivered the island from foes, made history during their period of rule and how they were finally expelled in 1798.

At around 1230pm we stopped at Howard Gardens to eat our packed lunches in a very serene environment. Our guide was then asked some questions about Mdina by our cubs. We then made our way back to Buga a bit more knowledgeable.

The Bronze Arrow group left from Church Square at 10.00 am. They left to Tarxien by bus. First they visited the Tarxien Temples and they made their way on foot to the Hypogeum.

Tarxien Temples – A guide showed the group the most complex of all temples in Malta, which comprise four temple units linked by a square court and most probably the last to be built on the Islands. We saw various carvings, which include stone idols, domestic animals carved, and altars decorated with spiral designs and other patterns. It is very interesting to note that stone rollers left outside the south temple were probably used for transporting the megaliths.

Hypogeum - Carved underground by the Neolithic people, the Hypogeum has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is made up of three levels, one above the other consisting of chambers, it seems that it was used both as a burial place and as a temple. Several statues and vases were recovered from the Hypogeum, amongst which was the figurine of the Sleeping lady which represents eternal sleep.
