| This
time a joint activity with the St. Michaels Pack was organised.
We met at Siggiewi and made a visit to the Limestone Heritage
which gave us an insight into the ancient crafts of quarrying
and masonry in Malta. It included a 10 minute video which
gave us a good introduction to the subject. Afterwards we
had a tour around the open pit quarry with life size figurines
displaying various stages of this craft. Also a range of
tools which were/are used in this field were displayed and
the cubs had the opportunity to carve a piece of stone which
they kept for as a souvenir.
We then proceeded with a hike from
Siggiewi to Buskett Gardens in spite of the continuous rain
and a very cold wind! (a phenomenon we always experience
when doing such activities - Bad weather!!) We stopped for
a small break to eat and relax a bit and continued with
our hike to Ghar il Kbir (the Great Cave) which is on a
hill on the way to Dingli. This cave was inhabited from
prehistoric times until the British ruled the Maltese Islands,
and it was the British who destroyed most of this cave to
discourage people from living in it because of hygiene problems.
In fact it consisted of several small caves in which hundreds
of families used to live together with their live stock.
On the way we could not miss the impressive cart ruts which
are all round this cave. It seems that they have been used
to transport soil or crops by our ancestors!
It was a very interesting day to all
and the pack enjoyed themselves very much.
