Troop Meeting 1st April 2006 - Photography Badge

Our troop meeting on Saturday 1st April 2006 was a special one, since it was all reserved for the Photography Badge.

Mr Anthony Agius, a professional photographer came to our hq and presented us with a detailed lecture on Photography. Amongst other things, he explained about apertures, shutter speed, lens, depth of field, type of films and the history of cameras. We also took part in some practical examples.

Everyone enjoyed this interesting session, which will finally lead our scouts to achieve the photography badge.

Sleep over and Bike hike - 25th Februarty 2006

On Saturday 25th February 2006 we met at Master Gunner’s House headquarters at 2pm. Thirteen scouts were present. Venture/junior leader Josef Mizzi gave us the cyclist badge lecture about safety and maintenance of the bicycles. Then he checked our bikes. Afterwards our Scout Leader Josephine Gatt briefed us about the new look of our troop meeting room. We also discussed the progress of our scout standard and advanced scout standard awards.

At 5pm we were divided into patrols and started to prepare our dinner. We had penne with pesto, meat, chips and salad, as well as bananas with cream. Soon after we had dinner, we cleared the dishes and tidied the kitchen. Then it was time to celebrate my 13th birthday. We all gathered around the table and I cut the cake and blew out the candles. I had to hear them all screaming “Happy Birthday”.

We played games until 12pm. We also had marshmallows in biscuits (slightly burnt), cooked in the embers of the fireplace. Then it was lights out and shut eyes…….

The next morning was the big day for us because it was the bike hike. After breakfast, seven scouts, namely: James Attard, Denise Bugeja, Sascha Blanco, Steven Dalli, Reuben Testa, Terence Cutajar and me ; Josef Mizzi and (surprise!!) our scout leader with her BMX came to this hike. We went from Birzebbuga to Gudja passing through Hal Saptan. Near Gudja airport we discover that Terence had a tube rupture, so we had to do the necessary repairs before proceeding. Having fixed the problem, then we passed through some mud pools and our Scout Leader got stuck in the mud and lost her balance. She ended up with slippers and socks soaked. We had a break at Ta’ Loretu Chapel in Gudja. We went back to Birzebbuga through Hal-Far Industrial Estate and on the way we had fun passing through a pool of water, with the result that we got wet up to the knees. We proceeded via Benghisa and straight to our headquarters. We arrived at exactly at 11:46:35am. It was great fun and we would very much like to repeat this experience in the near future. For me it was a truly memorable way to start my tennage years!!

Weekend camp Rinella
20-21-22 January 2006

Fourteen scouts, four ventures and four leaders spent a weekend camp at Rinella Scout Centre on 20/21/22nd January 2006.

Notwithstanding the bad weather, we succeeded to do several outdoor activities, namely: to cook open fire for Saturday lunch, to do casts and practice of knife and axe. Some of our scouts had the opportunity to do their camp cook badge, under the supervision and testing of Mr Nikola Spiteri, a professional chef; while others finished their observer badge. After a routine lecture of Pack a rucksack, the patrols were instructed to write and sing a rap song on this same theme. The older scouts had the task to remove weeds and logs, thus clearing the area near the toilets.

On Saturday evening we went to Kalkara Parish Church for mass. After dinner we had lashings and pioneering practice with the venture scouts. We finished off by some indoor games, as it was then raining cats and dogs.

The weather cleared slightly on Sunday morning and we had some court games outside. We left campsite around 2pm. This was yet another of our wet camps, which we will surely remember!!!
