On Saturday 3rd March 2007, seventeen scouts together with SL Josephine and ASL Yanika went
for a visit to Magħtab Waste Management Complex, since it was open for the public.
As soon as we arrived, a guide took us to the Civic Amenity Sites, where bulk waste, such as furniture, home
appliances, oils, batteries, computers, tires and construction materials, are easily separated, thus speeding
up the recycling process. Then we moved on to wait for a minibus which had to guide us through the Magħtab site.
We were given a cap, mouth mask and security jacket to wear. A guide explained in detail the process of collecting gas from the site.
Not all gas collected can be reused, so it is separated. Good gas is used for electricity and bad gas is burnt. Then we proceeded to the
Engineered Landfill, where we could see the disposal of domestic waste. A tent was erected to show all the plans the architects s
ubmitted for this complex and we saw the winning plans of this competition. Towards the end of our tour, we were given a drink
and biscuits, as well as literature about the Waste Management.
This visit was an interesting and educational tour, which we enjoyed very much.
