Cultural Visit to Gozo – Saturday 31st March 2007

Eighteen scouts and our troop leaders went to a trip to Gozo on 31st March 2007. We planned to explore some of the interesting places on our sister island.
At 7.15 am we met in front of Bir
żebbuġa’s church.  From there we took a minibus that drove us to Cirkewwa.  We boarded the 8.15am ship to Gozo and at 8.45am we arrived on the island.  First of all we went to  Ninu’s caves, where we could see many stalagmites and stalactites.  The guide also showed us his statues of the Good Friday.  Afterwards we went to Xerri’s Grotto.  While we were touring this grotto, the guide indicated the stalagmites which were in weird shapes, like a giraffe, an elephant’s ear or a piece of bacon.  After that fantastic tour we headed straight to the Ċitadella in Rabat.  When we arrived we went to the Cathedral where we could appreciate the beautiful paintings.  Some of us were surprised to notice the Cathedral’s false dome -  a “Trompe l’Oeil”  by Antonino Manuele of Messina (1739), which is Malta’s most spectacular perspective painting.  Afterwards we went up to see the bastions, where we could see most villages of Gozo.  Since it was already noon, we went back to the minibus to take us to Xlendi, where we had lunch at a small restaurant.
After lunch we were off to Dwejra.  We walked down near the sea and saw the Azure Window and Fungus Rock.  We spent some time near the inland sea and then we left for Ta’ Pinu’s Church.  We walked all the way up the Via Sagra and went down through the beautiful countryside to Għasri.  Then it was teatime and we stopped at Rabat for hot chocolate and pastries.
We took the 5pm ship back to Malta and arrived at Bir
żebbuġa around 6pm.  This was truly a wonderful day for all of us.  We thanked our leaders and went home.
