Easter Camp -2006

Our group’s annual Easter camp was held at Rinella Scout Centre between 17th and 23rd April 2006. Sixty five members attended, including eleven leaders.
The Pack Section: Three programmes were running at the same time in the pack section, namely the Bronze, the Silver and the Gold groups. Programmes covered lectures and badges such as open fire cooking, tracking signs, clouds formation and others. Badges covered were Athletes, Naturalist, Camper, First Aid and Entertainer. A Treasure hunt in Birgu was also planned for the Silver and Gold groups and a visit to the Birgu shelters was done. Abseiling was the highlight during the fun day as cubs were given the opportunity to try it out. Many of them succeeded in the event.
The Troop Section: The programme covered lectures on campsite safety, menu and cooking, cooking hygiene as well as discussions about standard badge items. Practicial sessions included pitching/striking of tents, knotting/lashings and a challenging orienteering hike to Kalkara and Vittoriosa. These were prepared by two senior scouts, who are working on their Chief scout award. A gymkana game with eight different checkpoints was a different and entertaining session. Between activities and duties, scouts were given ample time to relax and also to prepare for the campfire on Saturday night. Most evenings ended with a wide game, which is a favourite item with scouts.
During the first three days of camp, eight link badge cubs joined us for all the activies and programme. They even joined our scouts during the first shift of night watch.
The Unit Section: They were responsible for the organization of the abseiling activity on Fun Day – Wednesday, which involved all members of the group. They helped the pack and troop sections in the overall pitching and striking of tents of campsite, gave a helping hand where it was needed as well as overseeing the general duties.
General: Wednesday was a fun day for all members and we had five different checkpoints, namely: abseiling, tug of war, sack and relay races, as well as the triangle game. It was a pity we had to cancel the water games, due to the cool and windy weather we had.
Since Thursday and Friday were school days for most of our members, they went home Wednesday afternoon and returned on Friday evening. During these two days, the leaders did some much needed maintenance on the group’s equipment, especially tables, benches and tents.
During the last weekend the Zabbar Scout Group also camped at Rinella and they joined us for flag break/down, mass and also participated in our campfire. On Saturday afternnon we had a group mass in our campsite celebrated by Rev. Michael Bellizzi. The epitome and highlights of the camp was without any doubt, our campfire. We started off by showing a slide show of the best as well as funny photos taken during the camp. Then it was a mixture of stunts, songs, dances, as well as imitations by all: members, leaders, council and also parents! During campfire the group council members organized food and drinks as part of our fund raising activities. All in all it was a huge success and everyone had a great time. This was a truly memorable camp, where everyone worked together for one aim – to have fun together.
